A Record-Breaking Rainfall Event Brings Three Months’ Worth of Precipitation to Canada

Canada is currently facing a multitude of challenges this summer, including wildfires and extreme heat. However, another issue has emerged as four individuals are currently missing due to intense thunderstorms that caused record-breaking rainfall in Nova Scotia. Over the past two days, the province has experienced flash flooding, road washouts, and power outages as a result of these storms. According to CNN, some areas received three months’ worth of rain in just one day.

The floods have resulted in multiple vehicles being submerged, and local authorities have reported that two incidents in West Hants, north of Halifax, have left two adults and two children missing. The torrential downpours began on Friday afternoon and dumped over 7.8 inches of rain across the Halifax region, significantly surpassing the average July rainfall of 3.5 to 3.9 inches. Environment Canada estimates that certain areas may have received nearly 12 inches of rain within a 24-hour period.

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston described the situation as having received three months’ worth of rain in less than 24 hours, emphasizing the speed and intensity of the storms. Radar maps reveal that the heaviest rainfall occurred along the province’s southwestern shore, extending north of Halifax. In the Hammonds Plains area, flooding has caused damage to driveways and roads. Notably, this area had previously experienced a devastating wildfire in May, resulting in the destruction of 151 homes and businesses.

Additionally, the Halifax area has been experiencing intense humidity over the past week, which is unusual for a coastal region. These consecutive challenges are testing the resilience of the province and its residents.
