A Glimpse Inside Buck Mason’s T-Shirt Manufacturing Factory

Approximately sixty people were unfortunately laid off when Stitch Fix closed its factory and mill operations in November, according to Mr. Ford. A number of these individuals had dedicated decades of their lives to working at these sites.

Thankfully, by March, the facilities had been reopened under the name Buck Mason Knitting Mills, and some of the former Stitch Fix employees were rehired.

The cloth mill in Shillington is now producing fabrics for Buck Mason’s T-shirts and other tops, utilizing locally-grown cotton from California, Georgia, and Texas. One exciting development is the upcoming release of a limited-edition T-shirt made with fabric produced at the facility using a vintage Singer Supreme machine from the 1940s. Mr. Bareika, a knitting lead at the mill and a former Stitch Fix employee, shared that this Singer Supreme machine is one of the few remaining in operation. He resides in nearby Leesport, Pennsylvania.

At the Mohnton factory, the workforce is divided among various tasks, such as cutting, sewing, ironing, and packaging T-shirts. According to Mr. Ford, they currently produce around 10,000 T-shirts per month, but they have ambitious plans to double and eventually quadruple their capacity by fall.

Mr. Pleam, a resident of the small borough of Mohnton, revealed that the factory used to manufacture hats and military uniforms before transitioning to T-shirts. In its prime during the late 1970s, the factory and mill employed about 100 workers, producing approximately 22,000 T-shirts per week using fabrics sourced from the mill.
