A birder’s life has been altered since the incident with ‘Central Park Karen’

Christian Cooper, the Black birder who was involved in a viral confrontation with a white woman over her dog being off-leash in a protected section of Central Park three years ago, is now “living an absolute dream.” Cooper has authored a book titled “Better Living Through Birding: Notes From a Black Man in the Natural World” that is due to release next month. In one of the essays that has been adapted in the New York Times, he says birding, which has been his lifelong hobby, still influences his life. After the Central Park incident, National Geographic offered him a TV show on birding, which he hosts. The show called “Extraordinary Birder” premieres on June 17th. Surged interest in birding, inclusive of Black and brown birders, has brought Cooper immense joy. Birding has added meaning and brokering connections between people and the wild world, which embraces all of us, and Cooper is delighted by the difference it has made in his life. The essay can be found in full on the New York Times website.
