During a Senate Foreign Relations committee hearing on President Biden’s nominee for ambassador to Israel, three protestors were expelled for demanding the U.S. to cease its support of Israel and advocate for a ceasefire in its conflict with Hamas.
The confirmation of Jacob Lew as U.S. ambassador to Israel is currently under consideration by the Senate. Lew, who previously served as Treasury secretary during the Obama administration, was nominated by President Biden last month.
As they were being removed from the hearing, one of the protestors shouted phrases such as “we need a ceasefire now,” “stop sending aid to Israel,” and “stop the Israeli genocide.” Another protester exclaimed, “Palestinians need freedom.”
On Tuesday, seven progressive House Democrats urged Biden to advocate for a ceasefire during his visit to Israel in order to protect civilians. This request came in the wake of an explosion at a Gaza hospital that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of individuals.
The hearing on Lew’s nomination coincides with Biden and lawmakers from both political parties seeking to strengthen U.S. support for Israel’s campaign against Hamas, while also cautioning against external interference and the escalation of the conflict.
The White House is preparing a supplemental funding request that is expected to allocate approximately $100 billion for Israel, Ukraine, and border security.
Furthermore, Biden has announced an agreement to facilitate the movement of humanitarian aid from Egypt to Gaza. He has pledged $100 million to assist civilians in Gaza and the West Bank, emphasizing that the aid should directly benefit the 1 million displaced individuals in Gaza rather than Hamas.
This announcement comes at a time of heightened international pressure and public protests highlighting the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The region has been subjected to retaliatory Israeli airstrikes, resulting in numerous casualties and depriving the area of essential resources such as food, water, and medicine.
Following the explosion at a Gaza hospital, which claimed the lives of hundreds, including patients seeking medical treatment for previous airstrikes, protests erupted throughout the Middle East. A scheduled meeting between Biden and Arab leaders in Jordan was canceled, and the president proceeded with his trip to Tel Aviv.
