Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the Sikh activist who was killed, was a strong supporter of the Khalistan movement, which aims to establish an independent Sikh homeland. The movement is banned in India, but still has some support in countries like Canada and the United Kingdom. Prime Minister Trudeau discussed the matter with Prime Minister Modi at the G-20 Summit and expressed that any involvement in the killing would be unacceptable. India responded by denying allegations of involvement and stating that the focus should be on addressing Khalistani terrorists and extremists being sheltered in Canada, who pose a threat to India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
