Doctor warns private clinics profiting by falsely diagnosing Brits with Lyme disease

Private clinics are being accused of misdiagnosing vulnerable patients with Lyme disease in order to offer them expensive treatments, according to Dr Matthew Dryden, a consultant microbiologist. Dr Dryden believes that UK clinics are following in the footsteps of the US, where a profitable medical industry has formed around treating Lyme disease. As a result, patients are being prescribed costly and potentially harmful medications for extended periods, while more serious treatable conditions are overlooked. Dr Dryden warns that some clinics even use overseas laboratories to manipulate test results in order to support their Lyme disease diagnosis. This has prompted him to express concern about profit-driven clinics prioritizing financial gain over patient well-being. Lyme disease, which is spread by tick bites, can be difficult to diagnose and treat. The condition is characterized by a bullseye rash, flu-like symptoms, and fatigue. However, not all patients display the typical rash and the symptoms can mimic other illnesses, making diagnosis challenging. Antibiotics are typically used to treat the disease, but some individuals continue to experience symptoms for years. Dr Dryden suggests that patients with chronic fatigue syndrome are among those being inaccurately diagnosed with Lyme disease. Chronic fatigue syndrome is a poorly understood condition characterized by extreme tiredness. It is diagnosed based on symptoms and ruling out other potential causes. Treatment and a cure for chronic fatigue syndrome are currently unavailable. Research has indicated that the majority of Lyme disease diagnoses are inaccurate, leading to unnecessary antibiotic treatment. In England, approximately 850 cases of laboratory confirmed Lyme disease were reported last year, with an additional 1,000 to 2,000 cases diagnosed without laboratory testing.
