Colombia’s Chosen Mother for 2023 Miss Universe Pageant Revealed

Colombia’s Miss Universe contestant, Camila Avella, received her crown from her predecessor, Maria Fernanda Aristizabal. Avella, a married woman and mother to a two-year-old daughter, emerged victorious among 23 other participants in the Miss Universe Colombia competition held on September 2 in Baranquilla, Colombia. The 27-year-old model and TV presenter will represent her country in the 72nd edition of the international pageant in El Salvador this November.

Avella hopes to follow in the footsteps of the previous two Colombian winners, Luz Marina Zuluaga in 1958 and Paulina Vega in 2014, and become the third Colombian woman to achieve the title of Miss Universe. It’s worth noting that the Miss Universe Organization (MUO) recently expanded its eligibility criteria to include mothers and married women in the competition, an update that predates the company’s acquisition by Thai media mogul Anna Jakrajutatip.

The Miss Universe Philippines (MUPH) organization has also followed suit and allowed mothers and married women to participate in their 2023 competition. Claire Dacanay from Parañaque City, a mother herself, has made it to the semifinals. While this is a relatively new development for the Miss Universe pageant, the Miss Global contest has already permitted mothers to compete alongside single women and those without children. In fact, Eileen Gonzales, a single mother, represented the Philippines in the 2018 Miss Global pageant.

Back in the Philippines, actress, model, and 2019 Miss World Top 12 finalist Michelle Dee emerged as the winner of the 2023 Miss Universe Philippines competition. She is the daughter of 1979 Miss International Melanie Marquez and a cousin of 2017 Reina Hispanoamericana Teresita Ssen Marquez. Dee aims to become the fifth Filipino woman to be crowned Miss Universe, following in the footsteps of Gloria Diaz (1969), Margie Moran (1973), Pia Wurtzbach (2015), and Catriona Gray (2018).

The 2023 Miss Universe pageant will culminate in a grand coronation show on November 18. R’Bonney Gabriel, a Filipino-American sustainable fashion designer and advocate from the United States, will pass on her title to the next deserving winner.
