National recalls of frozen desserts in Canada due to Listeria

Several frozen desserts in Canada are undergoing a recall due to potential Listeria contamination. This issue was brought to light after cases of Listeria illness were reported in the United States.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced the recall of six products sold by the U.S. brand Soft Serve on The Go. The affected products include cups of ice cream, sorbet, and other frozen desserts that were sold in Ontario and Quebec.

The CFIA is currently conducting a food safety investigation, which may result in the recall of additional products. However, no illnesses related to these specific products have been reported in Canada so far.

The CFIA advises Canadians not to consume or distribute the recalled products and to dispose of them or return them to the store if they have been purchased.

The CFIA has stated that the recall was initiated after receiving an alert from another country (the U.S.) where Soft Serve On The Go ice cream cups were pulled from 20 states this week.

While no deaths have been reported, at least two people have been hospitalized in New York and Pennsylvania due to Listeria illness, according to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The CDC has warned that the actual number of cases may be higher than reported, and that the outbreak may extend beyond the states with known illnesses.

Listeria monocytogenes is a type of bacteria that is commonly found in soil and can cause food-borne illnesses in humans.

The CFIA emphasizes that food contaminated with Listeria may not exhibit any visual or olfactory signs of spoilage, but it can still make individuals sick.
