Secretary of State Antony Blinken had a productive and meaningful discussion with Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Qin Gang on Sunday, as described by a spokesperson from the U.S. State Department.
In a statement, Matthew Miller emphasized that Blinken and Qin highlighted the importance of diplomatic efforts and effective communication channels to minimize misunderstandings and miscalculations.
Furthermore, Miller revealed that Qin has accepted Blinken’s invitation to continue the discussions in Washington.
During their meeting, Blinken and Qin recognized the significance of promoting exchanges between the people of both countries. Blinken also raised concerns and explored potential areas of cooperation where their interests align.
“The Secretary reiterated the unwavering commitment of the United States to safeguard the interests and values of the American people. Additionally, the United States will collaborate with its allies and partners to advance a world that is characterized by freedom, openness, and adherence to the rules-based international order,” stated Miller.
Blinken’s visit to China is occurring against the backdrop of escalating tensions between the two nations. He arrived in Beijing on Sunday and will remain there until Monday before departing for London. Prior to his trip, Blinken had a phone conversation with Qin and will continue their discussions over a working dinner. He will also engage with other Chinese officials throughout his visit.
This trip signifies the first visit to China by a U.S. secretary of State since 2018, highlighting its importance. Originally scheduled for February, Blinken’s trip was postponed due to an incident involving a Chinese surveillance balloon crossing into U.S. territory.
