Renowned actor Frederic Forrest, known for his exceptional performances in films like “Apocalypse Now,” “The Conversation,” “The Rose,” and “One From the Heart,” has passed away at the age of 86.
Forrest died on Friday in Santa Monica after a prolonged illness, as reported by various media outlets.
Actress Bette Midler, who co-starred with Forrest in the 1979 film “The Rose,” announced the news on Twitter Friday evening.
“The remarkable and beloved Frederic Forrest has left us,” Midler wrote. “I extend my gratitude to all of his fans and friends for their unwavering support during these past few months. He was an extraordinary actor and a brilliant individual, and I feel fortunate to have had him in my life. He found peace at the end.”
Forrest was born in Texas and made his stage debut in the 1960s. Alongside an extensive list of films, he appeared in notable productions such as “Tucker: The Man and His Dream” (1988), “The Missouri Breaks” (1976), “It Lives Again” (1978), “Hammett” (1982), “Valley Girl” (1983), “The Stone Boy” (1984), “The Two Jakes” (1990), “Chasers” (1994), “Lassie” (1994), “Point Blank” (1998), and “The Quality of Light” (2003).
His television credits include starring in the 1974 CBS movie “Larry,” the miniseries “Quo Vadis?” in 1985, “Lonesome Dove” in 1989, and a recurring role on the late 1980s series “21 Jump Street.”
Forrest had a particularly fruitful collaboration with director Francis Ford Coppola, working together on four films directed by Coppola and one, “Hammett,” in which Coppola served as the executive producer.
His character, “Chef” Hicks, met a memorable demise towards the end of “Apocalypse Now,” and he played the male lead alongside Teri Garr in Coppola’s ambitious 1982 romance “One From the Heart,” which unfortunately failed to find success at the box office.
His final acting credit was in the 2006 remake of “All the King’s Men,” where he portrayed the father of Sean Penn’s character, Willie Stark.
