7-Year-Old’s Holiday Henna Tattoo Leaves Permanent Burned Butterfly Design: Mother Worries for Her Daughter’s Emotional Well-being

Mother Warns of Potential Scarring Due to Henna Tattoo Allergic Reaction

A seven-year-old girl’s henna tattoo turned into a nightmare for her and her family when it caused her skin to crack and bleed. Matilda Newton, accompanied by her mother Kirsty Newton, received the 3cm butterfly tattoo on her right forearm during their holiday at an all-inclusive Turkish hotel. However, the tattoo, which initially seemed harmless, quickly became red and itchy once they returned to their home in Pudsey, West Yorkshire. Concerned for her daughter’s well-being, Newton took her to the pharmacy twice before rushing her to Leeds General Infirmary when her skin started to crack and bleed.

Doctors at the hospital diagnosed Matilda with an allergic reaction to a chemical in the black henna used for her tattoo. Kirsty Newton is now urging other parents to exercise caution when allowing their children to get henna tattoos, emphasizing the importance of getting a skin test beforehand. The Newtons were not informed that black henna was being used; the tattoo stand only advertised henna tattoos. Mrs. Newton worries that the butterfly burn will leave a permanent scar on her daughter’s arm. She believes the reaction was caused by the presence of paraphenylenediamine (PPD) in the black henna.

Black henna tattoos, made from substances like PPD found in hair dyes, are not genuine henna tattoos, which are orange/brown in color and do not stain the skin black. The use of these substances on the skin can cause severe reactions, including blistering, painful burns, and scarring. It may also lead to a lifelong sensitivity to PPD, increasing the risk of allergic reactions to hair dye in the future. Dermatologists have seen a rise in cases of adverse reactions to black henna tattoos in recent years.

In order to raise awareness about the dangers of black henna, Kirsty Newton has posted photos of her daughter’s butterfly burn on social media. She hopes that sharing their story will encourage others to be cautious and undergo skin tests before getting henna tattoos. Newton also highlighted the lack of a skin test at the hotel where her daughter received the tattoo. She urges people to take precautions and ensure they have skin tests done prior to getting any tattoos.
