7 Iron-Rich Foods to Combat Tiredness and Anemia

Is Feeling Tired Just a Part of Aging? Think Again!

Feeling tired as you age might not just be a normal part of the process. In many cases, iron-deficiency anemia could be the culprit, a condition that affects one in six adults over 65. This condition is caused by a lack of healthy red blood cells needed to carry oxygen throughout the body, and the root cause is often a lack of iron.

Michael Auerbach, a clinical professor of medicine at Georgetown University, explains that aging can lead to difficulties absorbing iron properly due to gastrointestinal issues. Similarly, certain medications, such as those for acid reflux or daily low-dose aspirin, can also interfere with iron levels and metabolism, contributing to anemia in older adults.

Underlying health issues, such as ulcers, colon polyps, and cancer, can also cause internal bleeding and result in iron deficiency, according to Caroline Cromwell, an assistant professor of medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Symptoms of anemia include tiredness, dizziness, shortness of breath, and cold hands or feet.

To maintain proper iron levels, men and women over 50 should aim for 8 milligrams of iron a day, with vegans and vegetarians potentially needing up to 15 mg. It’s important to pair plant-based iron sources with vitamin C-rich foods, such as citrus and tomatoes, to improve absorption. Foods such as fortified breakfast cereal, oysters, white beans, lentils, and tofu are great sources of iron.

While it may be tempting to take iron supplements, it’s crucial to consult with a healthcare provider first. Iron supplements can mask symptoms of other types of anemia, and taking too much iron can lead to digestive problems and health issues down the line. So before you start any iron supplement regimen, talk to your healthcare provider to get the best recommendations.
