3 people dead from consuming mushroom meal in Australia – Authorities launch investigation

August 9 (UPI) — Local authorities in Australia are currently undertaking an investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragic deaths of three individuals who consumed poisonous wild mushrooms during a dinner gathering in Leongatha, Australia.

The three unfortunate victims, who experienced severe illness after partaking in this ill-fated meal on July 29, have been identified as Gail Patterson, her husband Don Patterson, and her sister Heather Wilkinson.

Additionally, Heather Wilkinson’s husband, the Reverend Ian Wilkinson, also suffered from mushroom poisoning and is currently awaiting a liver transplant to save his life.

The victims began to display symptoms of illness after dining at the residence of Erin Patterson, who is the former daughter-in-law of Gail and Don Patterson.

It is worth noting that Erin Patterson and her two children did not experience any significant health issues after consuming the same meal.

Law enforcement agencies are currently examining a dehydrator that is in their possession as a possible link to this case, as reported by 9News.

In a separate incident in 2022, Simon Patterson, the ex-husband of Erin Patterson, revealed that he almost died due to severe gastric problems.

When questioned about Erin Patterson’s involvement, Homicide Detective Inspector Dean Thomas stated, “She is considered a suspect as she prepared and cooked the mushrooms for the meal.”

Thomas also acknowledged that these deaths could potentially be accidental and emphasized that the full facts surrounding this tragedy are not yet known.

Erin Patterson has firmly denied any wrongdoing, stating, “I didn’t do anything,” and expressing her concern for the loss her own children have experienced with the passing of their grandmother.
