In order to optimize your chances of running for elected offices in the March 2024 election in Los Angeles, it is crucial to confirm residency by the upcoming deadline, election officials announced on Tuesday.
If you are a candidate for Council Districts 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, or 14, as well as the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education Districts 1, 3, 5, or 7, you must be a resident within your respective district by October 7th. This is according to the Office of the City Clerk.
A statement from City Clerk Holly Wolcott emphasized that failure to meet the residency requirements will result in disqualification from running for office.
The deadline, as set by the City Charter, is 30 days prior to November 6th. This is the first day that candidates can file a Declaration of Intention to Become a Candidate.
Furthermore, candidates must be registered voters within their respective Council district to be eligible for election on the council. Candidates for the LAUSD board must be registered voters within the school district.
The Office of the City Clerk is responsible for overseeing candidate filing for both the city and the LAUSD.
The city’s primary nominating election is scheduled for March 5th, and the general municipal election will take place on November 5th, 2024.
