The Cathedral City Police Department was alerted about the accident at 6:23 p.m. on Tuesday. The collision involved a single vehicle on the eastbound shoulder of Varner Road near Palm Drive, as stated by Sgt. Rudy Castro.

Upon arrival, officers discovered that the vehicle had crashed into an electrical pole, causing both occupants to be ejected from the car, said Castro.

Unfortunately, the paramedics from Cathedral City Fire Department pronounced Arellano dead at the scene. The other occupant suffered critical injuries and was immediately transported to Desert Regional Medical Center, where they remain in critical condition.

Sgt. Castro’s statement explained, “Due to both occupants being ejected from the vehicle, Officers were unable to determine which occupant was driving the vehicle during the collision. The exact cause of the collision is still under investigation, but it appears that speed was a factor.”
