17 people missing, 3 fatalities at Hindu temple’s base camp in northern India due to landslides

Torrential rains have triggered a devastating landslide at a revered Hindu temple in Uttarakhand, India, resulting in the tragic loss of three lives. Sadly, 17 individuals, including families and pilgrims, remain missing in the village of Gaurikund. The landslides occurred on Thursday night, causing a portion of a hill to collapse under the weight of heavy rain. The relentless downpour caused giant boulders to crash down on nearby shops and eateries, washing everything away in the fast-flowing Mandakini River.

Despite the adverse weather conditions, rescue teams have bravely resumed their search efforts. However, progress has been hindered by the ongoing heavy rains in the area. As of Friday evening, only three bodies had been recovered due to the harsh conditions. Rescue operations had to be momentarily suspended due to limited visibility caused by the rain.

Gaurikund, nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, has long served as the starting point for countless devout pilgrims embarking on a spiritual journey to the revered Kedarnath temple. This temple holds immense significance for Hindus and attracts tourists and religious devotees from around the world. The picturesque region is known for its natural beauty and continues to draw visitors, despite the challenging weather conditions.

It is important to note that this region has experienced severe floods in the past. In 2013, a devastating flash flood claimed the lives of over 6,000 individuals and caused destruction in the same area, taking away the temple town of Kedarnath and nearby residential buildings along the pilgrimage route.

Our hearts go out to the victims and their families affected by this tragic incident. We will continue to follow the updates on the rescue operations and provide further information as it develops.
