A tragic incident occurred on Friday in Britain, as a school bus carrying students from West Kriby and Calday elementary schools overturned, resulting in the deaths of both the bus driver and a 14-year-old girl. Merseyside Police confirmed the fatalities and stated that several other children were transported to hospitals for medical treatment.
The bus, operated by Carvers Coaches based in Wirral, was traveling in a convoy with other buses on its regular 22-mile route from Chester to West Kirby along the M53. The incident caused the closure of M53 in both directions between junctions five and four towards Liverpool. Emergency personnel, including two fire engines and a search and rescue team, responded to the scene to stabilize the vehicle and assist the injured individuals.
While investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the crash, authorities currently believe that no other vehicles were involved. Merseyside Police Chief Superintendent Graeme Robson assured the public that support would be provided to the families of the deceased through Family Liason Officers. Additionally, both schools are working with the police to offer necessary trauma support to the children who were on the bus.
Politicians have expressed their condolences, with Alison McGovern, a Labor Party MP for Wirral South, stating that the news of the crash was “incredibly hard to bear.” Labor leader Keir Starmer also offered his sympathies, describing the incident as “unimaginably sad.”
