14 Police Officers Abducted by Gunmen in Mexico en route to Chiapas Capital

Armed individuals have abducted 14 state police officers in the southern region of Mexico, prompting a significant deployment of federal and local forces. The Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection in Chiapas state confirmed that the abducted officers, all of whom were male, are currently being searched for through a combined air and ground operation.

According to an official from the state police force, who wishes to remain anonymous due to lack of authorization, the officers were traveling to the capital of Chiapas in a personnel transport truck when they were intercepted by several trucks carrying gunmen. While the women in the vehicle were released, the men were taken away by the abductors.

This incident took place on the highway between Ocozocoautla and Tuxtla Gutierrez. The escalation of violence in the Mexican border region with Guatemala is attributed to an ongoing territorial dispute between the dominant Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

During a recent tour of Chiapas, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador downplayed the violence in the area, asserting that there is generally peace and tranquility in the state. However, just a day prior to the president’s visit, an official from the Attorney General’s Office was shot in Tuxtla Gutierrez, resulting in the death of her companion. The official sustained serious injuries and is currently hospitalized.

Furthermore, on June 19, a clash between the military and suspected members of organized crime led to the deaths of a National Guard member and a civilian in Ocozocoautla, which is in close proximity to the location of Tuesday’s kidnapping.
