Zoe Saldana Clarifies: I Choose Roles based on Depth, Not Just Character Strength

Paramount+ is set to release a new thriller series called Special Ops: Lioness, starring Zoe Saldana and Nicole Kidman. Inspired by a real US military program, the show follows Joe (Saldana), a CIA agent struggling to balance her personal and professional life in the war on terror. She becomes involved in the Lioness Program, overseen by Kaitlyn Meade (Kidman), where she goes undercover alongside a Marine Raider to combat state terrorism and prevent future attacks.

Saldana and Kidman recently attended a special screening of Special Ops: Lioness in London. When asked about her attraction to “strong” roles, Saldana shared that she sees strength as an inherent quality of women. She chose this project primarily because of the creators, Taylor Sheridan and Nicole Kidman. Saldana admires the selflessness and sacrifice displayed by the characters in the workforce and at home, and believes their vulnerability and afflictions make them compelling to portray.

Kidman, discussing her role in the series, explained that as an actor, emotions play a crucial role, but in an espionage setting like the CIA, emotions must be kept in check and compartmentalized. She commended the work of creator Taylor Sheridan, known for his previous projects like Sicario and Yellowstone.

Special Ops: Lioness will premiere on Paramount+ on July 23.
