In an exclusive interview with “Meet the Press” that aired Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskyy extended an invitation to Donald Trump to visit Ukraine. This invitation follows Trump’s promise that he could end the war between Russia and Ukraine within 24 hours if re-elected in 2024.
Zelenskyy expressed doubts about Trump’s claim, stating, “For me, what can I say? So he’s very welcome as well. President Biden was here, and he understood some details that can only be understood by being here,” during his conversation with NBC News’ Kristen Welker. “So, I invite President Trump.”
However, Zelenskyy also acknowledged that he would require 24 minutes, not 24 hours, to explain to President Trump that resolving the war within that timeframe is impossible due to Putin’s involvement.
Furthermore, Zelenskyy expressed uncertainty about whether Trump would continue to support Ukraine if re-elected, stating, “Really, I don’t know.”
In a previous interview with “Meet the Press” in September, Trump claimed he could resolve the Ukrainian war within 24 hours if re-elected, but provided few details regarding his plans. He justified his vagueness by stating, “If I tell you exactly, I lose all my bargaining chips.”
Trump’s assertion garnered attention during his presidential campaign, and other Republican candidates, such as Chris Christie and Mike Pence, have also visited Ukraine and met with Zelenskyy.
Since leaving office in January 2021, Zelenskyy has had no contact with Trump. However, he emphasized that the support for Ukraine goes beyond U.S. leadership and relies on the opinion of the American people, whom he believes are crucial in determining the course of action.
Lastly, Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the support and understanding shown by the American society, stating, “I know that they support Ukraine, love us. And really, they understand our difficult, difficult war against Russia.”
