Zach Tuohy Matches Jim Stynes’ AFL Record of ‘Honour’

Zach Tuohy, a key player for the Geelong Cats, celebrated his impressive milestone in the AFL by equaling Jim Stynes’ record for the most appearances by an Irish player in the league. Tuohy, originally from Portlaoise, marked his 264th game in style, being named one of Geelong’s best players in their draw against the Sydney Swans. With 28 disposals, including 19 kicks and 9 handballs, as well as five marks and a behind, Tuohy proved his worth on the field.

Reflecting on his journey, Tuohy expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to play in the AFL. “The goal for me coming out was to play one game,” he said. “It’s strange to think I’ve been fortunate enough to get here and be part of that and (with) the Cats.” He also acknowledged the significance of equaling the record set by Jim Stynes, saying, “I’m not sure how to feel because Jim’s everyone’s hero.”

Tuohy’s career in the AFL has been marked by success and dedication. He initially arrived in Australia as a 19-year-old in 2009 for a trial with Carlton, eventually signing with the Blues in 2011 and playing 120 games over six years. Since joining the Geelong Cats, he has added an impressive 164 games to his career. In the previous season, Tuohy and his teammate Mark O’Connor became only the second and third Irish players to win the AFL Grand Final, following in the footsteps of Tadhg Kennelly.

Expressing his gratitude for his career, Tuohy remarked, “It’s an honor, and like I said pre-game, I feel like I owe the AFL and Australia an awful lot.” He continued, “I just love Geelong. I consider myself so lucky and fortunate to have ended up at the Cats. It sort of reignited my love and passion for the game, and obviously they’ve delivered me a bit of success, which I’m really grateful for. I’m not sure what I did to deserve playing for Geelong, but I’m glad.”

This weekend, Tuohy will have the opportunity to break the record as he takes the field against North Melbourne. With Geelong currently sitting ninth on the ladder, just outside of the play-off spots, Tuohy will be determined to continue his impressive career and help his team secure a place in the finals.
