Golf legend Tiger Woods might have a shot at playing in the US Ryder Cup team. Zach Johnson, the US captain, expressed openness to selecting Woods for the tournament if he doesn’t automatically qualify.

Johnson made this statement before the Sony Open in Hawaii. He indicated that if Woods, who is 47 years old, doesn’t make it to the team on his own, he would consider including him based on his performance and competitiveness.

Johnson explained, “I would only contemplate having him on the team if he felt – if he was putting up some numbers and some scores, No. 1, where he’s showing some sign of being competitive.” He emphasized the importance of discussing this decision with the rest of the team and with Woods himself, acknowledging Woods’ deep investment in the team and future Cups.

Johnson added, “And then I think you would do anything and everything for the betterment of the team. I assume he would say … I don’t like basing on assumptions … but I’m confident that he would say, ‘Yeah, I can play, or no, I can’t.'”

Last year, Johnson confirmed that Woods would be part of the US Ryder Cup team “in some capacity,” emphasizing Woods’ commitment to the team. However, Woods’ health could pose challenges to his participation, Johnson noted.

Johnson acknowledged that Woods has faced recent difficulties that make it challenging for him to compete due to travel or other factors. Woods’ career has been affected by injuries, particularly since his car accident in February 2021.

In December, Woods withdrew from the Hero World Challenge due to foot pain, and there have been moments where his movement on the field appeared to be hindered. Despite these challenges, Woods remains optimistic about playing in select events.

Team US will compete in the Ryder Cup in Italy this year from September 25 to October 1. The tournament will be held at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club near Rome, marking the first time the event takes place in Italy. In 2021, Team US won the Ryder Cup with a dominant performance over Europe at Whistling Straits.
