YouTube takes action against North Korean vloggers showcasing the regime’s “amiable” image

With her refined English accent and passion for the Harry Potter series, 11-year-old Song-a might appear to be just like any other affluent schoolgirl sharing her thoughts and daily life on YouTube. However, South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) claims that this video blogger, who invites viewers to explore the wonders of her “magnificent” hometown of Pyongyang, is actually a pawn in North Korea’s “psychological warfare” operations. Song-a’s YouTube account, which had amassed over 30,000 subscribers, was terminated this week, along with two other accounts, as authorities in Seoul cracked down on a network of North Korean propaganda channels.
