Yet another bin collection company raises prices for households

Greyhound Recycling, one of the leading waste collection companies in the greater Dublin area, has recently announced an increase in its prices starting from July 1. This move comes in light of the rising costs facing the company’s operations.

Beginning next month, households will see their monthly charge rise by €2.99, bringing the total monthly fee from €16.50 to €24.47. This represents a significant increase of 48% in less than 18 months. The last price hike for Greyhound Recycling customers occurred in March of last year.

With approximately 100,000 customers in the Dublin area, Greyhound Recycling has defended the price increase, stating that it is necessary due to factors beyond their control and the mounting costs of waste collection and processing. However, attempts to contact the company for further comment were unsuccessful.

In a recent email sent to customers, Greyhound Recycling attributed the price increase to “factors beyond our control” and emphasized that their costs for waste collection and processing continue to rise.

Interestingly, this announcement comes just two months after another prominent waste collection company, Panda Recycling, introduced a special charge for households who dispose of food and garden waste in their compost bins. This move by Panda Recycling has been criticized as it undermines efforts to encourage households to recycle.

Starting in May, Panda Recycling began charging €3.80 for each compost bin lift. This additional fee follows a general waste bin-lift charge increase of over 12% and an increase in service charges. The charge for each lift of a general waste bin has risen by €1.13 to €10.25, equating to a 12.4% increase since September.

Moreover, the half-yearly service charge has increased by €4.86 to €62.50, resulting in an annual service charge of €125, reflecting an 8.4% rise. Recycling bins also incur a charge of 80c per lift, alongside an additional 0.045c per kg fee.

These steady price increases by both Greyhound Recycling and Panda Recycling have put a strain on households, with those having their bins collected every fortnight now paying €50 more per year for waste collection services.

The introduction of a specific charge for each compost bin lifted by Panda Recycling has surprised financial adviser Frank Conway, formerly of the Government’s Price Monitoring Group for bin charges. However, Panda Recycling has offered some cost-saving measures, including one free month of service for customers signing up to direct debit payments.

In defense of the new compost bin charge, Panda Recycling argues that many customers, not only theirs but also those of other waste collection companies, already effectively pay for compost bin lifts through a bundled fee that covers the cost of lifting all three different bins.

As household waste costs continue to rise and waste management companies struggle to address these financial pressures, customers in the Dublin area are left grappling with higher expenses for essential services.
