Please note that this interview took place prior to the announcement that season five will be the final season of the show.

As fans are aware, Kayce is the sole surviving legitimate son of Montana cattle rancher John Dutton (Kevin Costner). Since his older brother’s death in the first episode, Kayce has been poised to inherit the expansive ranch from his father.

In the midseason finale, Kayce receives a glimpse of his potential future as his father asks him to assume the daily operations of Yellowstone while John focuses on his role as Montana governor and his deputy, Rip (Cole Hauser), handles affairs in Texas.

“I believe this is a pivotal moment for Kayce,” Grimes declares when discussing the current state of his character. “It’s his legacy, and I am genuinely excited about this new chapter for Kayce and Monica, as it will reveal a whole different side of them.”

“Undoubtedly, this responsibility will push him beyond his comfort zone,” he continues, expressing, “with John’s obligations, it is time for Kayce to step up.”

Grimes believes that viewers will be thrilled to witness Kayce, his wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille), and their son, Tate (Brecken Merrill), embrace their newfound roles as caretakers of the ranch.

“With Monica’s willingness to give it another try and return to the ranch, it displays a fresh side of her,” he remarks. “Audiences have been waiting for this, and it has undoubtedly been a challenging journey for them.”

Although the latter half of season five was originally set to premiere in November, the current status of the show’s production suggests that it is unlikely. The final episodes have yet to be written, filmed, or edited.

In June, co-creator and showrunner Taylor Sheridan announced that he stopped writing “Yellowstone” in support of the ongoing writers’ strike.

The strike has also caused delays in the production of the prequel series “1923” and the development of the upcoming “Yellowstone” spinoff featuring Matthew McConaughey.
