‘Yellowstone’ Contract No Longer Binding, Says Kevin Costner

Kevin Costner has officially declared that he has cut ties with the popular Paramount Network drama, “Yellowstone,” raising speculation about the show’s conclusion. In court documents pertaining to his contentious divorce from his second wife, Christine Baumgartner, the actor explicitly states that he will not be receiving any monetary compensation from the series, except for his “back-end contractual participation rights.” According to Costner, he will earn significantly less in 2023 compared to the previous year, as he is no longer under contract for “Yellowstone,” which served as his primary source of income. The 68-year-old actor, who reportedly earned $1.3 million per episode in 2022, reveals that both the fixed amount “pay-or-play” and episodic compensation for the neo-Western series have ceased. Costner has yet to receive any participation compensation from “Yellowstone” in 2023. A “pay-or-play” deal, generally reserved for high-profile individuals in Hollywood, ensures payment even if participants are released from their contract. In Costner’s case, any compensation he receives from “Yellowstone” will only come from his back-end contractual participation rights, which are not fixed. Costner disputes the most recent report from the producer indicating that he is not owed any participation money. Previously, there was speculation that Costner would appear in the final episodes of the series to conclude his character’s storyline. However, now that Costner has confirmed his departure, it is uncertain if his character’s death will occur off-screen since he no longer has a legal obligation to film scenes. Additionally, the remaining episodes of “Yellowstone’s” fifth season face delays due to the ongoing writers’ strike. Series co-creator Taylor Sheridan has stated that the episodes have not been written, shot, or edited, making it unlikely that the latter half of season five will premiere in November 2023 as previously announced. Costner made his remarks about his “Yellowstone” contract while addressing financial matters in his divorce case, in which his estranged wife requested $248,000 in monthly child support. The actor disclosed that he informed his wife in the prior year that he was considering leaving the series, explaining that 2023 would be financially challenging. Furthermore, Costner revealed his decision to defer his salary for his upcoming four-movie Western saga, “Horizon,” in which he is involved in multiple roles, including writing, producing, directing, and acting. This decision will result in reduced disposable income for the family compared to previous years. Baumgartner, a handbag designer, filed for divorce last month, citing irreconcilable differences.
