July 19 (UPI) — Patrick Sandoval’s impressive performance helped the Los Angeles Angels secure another victory, resulting in the New York Yankees starting the second half of the season with a 1-4 record.

Mickey Moniak, the center fielder for the Angels, contributed significantly to their 5-1 win at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, Calif., going 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs.

“The team is hungry to win,” Sandoval told reporters. “You see the way we’ve played since the All-Star break. We’ve been in some really close and hard-fought games.

“This lineup is not going to give up easily against anyone. Frankly, it’s our responsibility as starters to pitch deep into the game and get plenty of outs.”

Zach Neto, the shortstop for the Angels, kicked off the bottom of the first inning with a single to right field for their first hit. Moniak then came up to bat two at-bats later, facing Yankees’ starter Domingo German.

German first induced a swing and miss with a changeup, and then threw a 91.3-mph inside fastball. Moniak swung his bat, making contact and sending the pitch to right field for a 413-foot, two-run home run.

The Yankees didn’t manage to record a hit until the top of the third inning, when second baseman Gleyber Torres hit a 404-foot solo home run to left field.

In the bottom of the inning, German threw a wild pitch with the bases loaded, resulting in the Angles adding their third run. Shohei Ohtani, the designated hitter for the Angels, contributed an RBI triple, giving them a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Moniak plated the final run in the next at-bat with a single to right field, bringing in Ohtani.

Sandoval retired 15 consecutive batters after allowing the home run to Torres. Relief pitchers Jacob Webb and Carlos Estevez closed out the game, not allowing any hits or runs over the final 1 2/3 innings.

German had a rough outing, allowing four hits and five runs over six innings, resulting in his season record dropping to 5-6. Torres and shortstop Anthony Volpe were the only Yankees players to record hits.

The Angels (48-48) are currently tied with the Seattle Mariners (47-47) for fourth place in the American League West, trailing the first-place Texas Rangers (57-39) by nine games.

The Yankees (50-46) now find themselves in last place in the American League East, trailing the first-place Tampa Bay Rays (60-38) by nine games. They have a 2-8 record in their last 10 games.

“We have a roster filled with talented players, many of whom are going through a tough stretch right now,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone acknowledged. “For some, this is likely the most difficult stretch they’ve experienced in their careers. But we won’t back down. We’ll keep fighting and grinding it out.”

The Angels will host the Yankees at 7:07 p.m. EDT Wednesday in Anaheim.
