Yankees Proceed with Caution, Field Aaron Judge as DH Once More

Aaron Judge, the talented outfielder for the New York Yankees, has been making a gradual comeback after a two-month stint on the injured list due to a torn ligament in his right big toe. While he has been playing as a designated hitter (DH) in his recent games, it is worth noting that Judge has not fully recovered and is still experiencing some soreness. This has affected his performance on the bases, as he has not been as agile as usual.

Manager Aaron Boone acknowledged that Judge is not performing at his normal level and mentioned a slight hitch in his gait when running from first to third. However, this is expected given the circumstances, and the team plans to be cautious with his workload by utilizing the DH position and giving him rest days.

Despite Judge’s limitations, he has been productive at the plate, going 3-for-7 with a home run and six walks in three games. Boone mentioned that Judge could still play in right field on certain days when he feels comfortable doing so, but these decisions will be made on a daily basis in consultation with Judge.

The need for Judge to be the DH means that Giancarlo Stanton would have to step in as the outfielder or be left out of the lineup. In Tuesday’s game, with Judge at DH, Stanton was on the bench and struck out as a pinch hitter with runners in scoring position.

Looking ahead, Gerrit Cole is scheduled to start the series finale against the Rays, and Clarke Schmidt is expected to start the series opener against the Astros. However, beyond these games, the rotation is uncertain. Luis Severino’s place in the rotation is being discussed due to his recent struggles, and Nestor Cortes, who is on the mend, may be activated soon.

Furthermore, Jhony Brito, who was called up to make a spot start in place of the injured Domingo German, remains with the team. Although his specific role and length of stay with the Yankees are unclear at the moment.

In other news, outfielder/designated hitter Willie Calhoun, who was designated for assignment, has cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (SWB).
