Yankees’ Anthony Volpe Gives Outstanding Derek Jeter Impersonation with Jump Toss

In a remarkable display of athleticism, the Yankees’ shortstop effortlessly fielded a ground ball that soared deep into the hole. With a powerful throw across his body, he emulated the legendary Derek Jeter, a play he had witnessed countless times.

Anthony Volpe, following in the footsteps of his idol, executed the same play during the fifth inning of the Yankees’ victory over the Astros. Hailing from New York, Volpe’s admiration for Jeter made this moment even more special.

“Took a page out of his guy’s book — Jeets was his guy,” said manager Aaron Boone, who had played third base while watching Jeter make similar plays throughout his career. “I’m sure he’s seen that a lot in his mind and his dreams.”

Maintaining the spirit of Jeter, Volpe displayed his remarkable reflexes by jumping while making the throw. This split-second decision paid off as he successfully retired the speedy Mauricio Dubon at first base.

“I think maybe over time, it becomes just like a reaction,” Volpe reflected on his decision to jump. “I just messed around in practice [with the jump] a lot.”

This outstanding play not only contributed to Jhony Brito’s clean inning but also solidified Boone’s belief that Volpe deserves recognition as one of the best shortstops in the sport.

During spring training, Volpe occasionally played second base to accommodate Oswald Peraza’s strong arm. However, after a shaky start to the season, Volpe has improved defensively and consistently makes plays on balls within his reach.

Boone emphasized that Volpe should be part of the discussion for the highly coveted Gold Glove award, just as Jeter earned five throughout his career.

“It was a really good play with a good runner,” praised Boone. “He continues to just be super special on defense for us.”
