Yacht Broker Accused of CuttinG Too Many Corners, Says Former Collaborator Stockton Rush

  • A man attempting to sell one of the late CEO Stockton Rush’s submarines claimed that Rush had a history of cutting corners in his career.
  • The man also mentioned that a colleague had predicted Rush would face a disastrous situation on one of his missions.
  • Last month, Rush’s Titan submersible imploded while on a trip to the Titanic shipwreck.

An expedition yacht broker, who has been attempting to sell a submersible owned by OceanGate for the past five years, revealed that he had a relationship with CEO Stockton Rush and believed Rush had taken shortcuts in his work.

Last month, Rush’s infamous Titan submersible catastrophically imploded while on a mission to the Titanic shipwreck. It was widely reported that Rush did not properly classify his vessel according to industry standards.

Speaking to Insider, the broker Steve Reoch described the event as a terrible tragedy that confirmed industry fears. He stated that multiple industry experts had warned Rush about the quality of his submersible and the importance of classification, but their concerns were ignored.

Reoch mentioned that he had developed a relationship with Rush while attempting to sell the submersible and noted that Rush was a fun person to be with but had taken too many shortcuts in his work. Comparing OceanGate’s Antipodes submarine, which is currently for sale, to the Titan sub, Reoch highlighted the key difference of classification. The Antipodes was properly assessed, while the Titan was not.

According to Reoch, one of the individuals involved in building the Antipodes shared the same concerns about the Titan sub as others. Reoch found it eerie because this expert had repeatedly expressed fear about Rush’s submersible imploding or exploding, and unfortunately, those concerns became reality.

Reoch explained that Rush’s decision to forgo assessment despite warnings was also mentioned in an open letter written by industry leaders and explorers in 2018, which The New York Times reported on.

Reoch added that the Antipodes builder remembered Rush as a cowboy who was highly intelligent and charismatic but determined to build the submersible his way.
