Writers’ Union Displeased with Hollywood Studios’ Insufficient Proposed Changes

Hollywood studios and streaming services recently unveiled a revised proposal to the striking writers, but the Writers’ Guild of America (WGA) instructed its members to continue picketing as the offer failed to address all their concerns. The strike, which began on May 2, has had a significant impact on Hollywood productions and the California economy. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), representing major companies like Walt Disney and Netflix, made changes to their offer, including details about compensation, minimum staffing, residual payments, and limitations on artificial intelligence-generated content. However, the WGA deemed the proposal insufficient in protecting writers against the threats that led to the strike. The streaming platforms also offered to provide confidential quarterly reports disclosing the total number of hours viewed for each streaming show to the WGA. The union met with industry leaders, including Bob Iger, David Zaslav, Donna Langley, and Ted Sarandos, to discuss the new offer but stated that the meeting was not intended to strike a deal. Despite the counterproposal, the WGA plans to continue picketing and will provide its members with further updates on the state of negotiations.
