Striking writers and Hollywood studios will return to the bargaining table on Wednesday in hopes of ending the work stoppage that began in early May. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which handles negotiations for the studios, announced that the Writers Guild of America (WGA) reached out and requested a meeting last week. The AMPTP agreed and is currently working to schedule a meeting next week. Each member company of the AMPTP is committed to reaching a fair deal and ending the strike.
According to WGA negotiators, the two sides will meet this week, starting on Wednesday. They may not provide updates while negotiations are ongoing, but their focus is to quickly secure a fair deal for writers. They will reach out again when there is significant progress to report.
Since mid-August, the two sides have not met at the bargaining table, leading to stalled negotiations. However, the WGA negotiating team released a statement suggesting that some traditional Hollywood studios should break ranks with the AMPTP and directly negotiate a deal with the writers’ union. The WGA claims to have engaged in conversations with studio executives who believe a swift agreement can be reached.
Despite this, the AMPTP asserts that all its members are committed to working within the alliance to reach a deal that benefits all studios. They emphasize that any suggestion of working outside the AMPTP is false. The AMPTP has made offers addressing the major concerns of the WGA, including the most recent round of offers on August 17th and 18th.
Writers went on strike on May 2 and were joined on the picket line by the SAG-AFTRA actors’ union in July. Currently, there have been no known contract talks between the studios and SAG-AFTRA since the actors’ strike began.
