Worried about Imminent Execution Following Failed Lethal Injections

James Barber faces execution in Alabama on Thursday night, pending a possible intervention from an appeals court. Barber would be the first prisoner to be executed since a series of unsuccessful lethal injection attempts resulted in a temporary halt in executions starting in November. In an interview with NBC News, Barber, who was convicted of murdering Dorothy Epps in 2001, admits that although he has turned his life over to God and believes he is in God’s hands, he still feels unsettled about the impending execution. He expresses concerns about the flawed execution process, saying, “I have a fair amount of trepidation about the process that they obviously haven’t perfected—to be at their hands and be the first one after they didn’t do a true review of the protocol and made no real changes.”

James Barber’s execution would follow a series of botched executions in Alabama. In July 2022, Joe Nathan James Jr. endured a “lengthy, painful” execution that took three hours to find a vein. Alabama also failed to complete the executions of Alan Eugene Miller in September 2022 and Kenneth Eugene Smith in November 2022 due to difficulties in finding veins. These incidents were reported by Elizabeth Bruenig, who has been documenting Alabama’s execution issues for The Atlantic. Governor Kay Ivey promised a comprehensive review of execution protocols following these incidents, but Barber remains skeptical that anything will change this time. His lawyers have appealed to a higher court, but it is uncertain when a decision will be made. You can watch the full interview with Barber on NBC.
