World’s Ugliest Dog Title Goes to Scooter, a Bald Dog with Backward Legs

  • A 7-year-old Chinese crested dog with backward-facing legs has been named the “World’s Ugliest Dog.”
  • Scooter, the bald pooch, was almost euthanized at birth due to his deformity.
  • His owner, Linda Celeste Elmquist, shared that Scooter is just like any other dog and has a special love for sausage.

A 7-year-old Chinese crested dog with backward-facing legs has claimed the title of “World’s Ugliest Dog” after being rescued from certain death nearly a decade ago.

Scooter, the bald pooch, won the annual ugly dog contest at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California. His owner, Linda Celeste Elmquist, adopted him seven months ago when his previous owner could no longer care for him.

Scooter’s journey to fame began with the threat of euthanasia due to his deformity. Born with backward-facing hind legs, a breeder brought him in to be put down, but the Saving Animals From Euthanasia (SAFE) rescue group, of which Elmquist is a part, intervened and saved his life.

Despite doubts about his ability to crawl or walk freely, Scooter surprised skeptics by using the strength of his front legs to propel himself forward, although with a slight wobble.

Elmquist revealed that when Scooter gets tired, he simply rests on his backward-facing legs, which act like a tripod.

Due to relying on his front legs for mobility, Scooter now uses a wheeled cart for assistance in getting around. The cart was purchased with funds donated by friends and rescue groups.

Despite his deformity, Scooter is just like any other dog, except for his extreme liking for Braunschweiger sausage.

Scooter joins the roster of previous winners in the unique “World’s Ugliest Dog” competition, which has been running for 50 years. The event aims to celebrate the imperfections that make all dogs special and unique, often featuring contestants from rescue shelters and puppy mills.

Mr. Happy Face, a 17-year-old Chinese crested Chihuahua, was last year’s champion. He was also adopted after being rescued from a hoarder’s house.

Representatives for the “World’s Ugliest Dog” contest have not yet responded to Insider’s request for comment.
