She believes that people are inspired by hotels ranked from the best to the great, rather than focusing solely on the most expensive options. Pietrini emphasized that sustainability and uniqueness are increasingly important to consumers, which is why certain hotels are highlighted in the rankings.
While La Liste faces competition from other travel rankings and guides, it stands out by specifically focusing on hotels. However, the company will soon face competition from the influential 50 Best, which plans to release its own hotel ranking. It’s worth noting that most publications generate revenue through partnerships with culinary or beverage brands, credit card and travel-related companies, and funding from tourism agencies. La Liste currently does not have any government sponsors, but it remains open to the idea.
La Liste’s hotel rankings predominantly feature luxury properties, with an abundance of Four Seasons hotels making the top 1,600. The list is heavily influenced by hotels in the US, followed by Italy, France, and the UK. Pietrini acknowledged that the coverage tends to focus on European grand dames and major city hotels due to their frequent media mentions and higher visitor numbers. However, La Liste is considering adding more affordable hotels and guest homes to their extended list in the future.
In Ireland, Adare Manor and Ashford Castle stood out as the top-rated hotels with a score of 92.50. Alongside the rankings, La Liste also awards special honors based on their staff’s assessment of trends, cross-referencing sources, and industry contacts. The winners of ethical and sustainable awards included Bambu Indah in Bali and Six Senses Shaharut in Israel. New arrivals awards went to hotels such as Atlantis the Royal in Dubai, the Peninsula in Istanbul, and Capella in Sydney.
With numerous ties in the rankings, 20 hotels shared the fifth spot, including renowned properties like the Bulgari Hotel in Dubai, the Rosewood in London, the Baccarat Hotel in New York, and the Banyan Tree Mayakoba in Mexico. Additionally, approximately 200 hotels received top 10 scores, showcasing the exceptional quality of these establishments. Hotel Cipriani emerged as the sole No. 1 hotel with a score of 99.75, narrowly beating out the other hotels tied for second place with a score of 99.5.
