World Cup Injury Causes Serbia’s Borisa Simanic to Lose Kidney

Serbian Basketball Player Loses Kidney After World Cup Injury in Manila

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — In a devastating turn of events, forward Borisa Simanic of the Serbian Basketball Federation has lost one of his kidneys due to an injury sustained in a World Cup game against South Sudan. The team announced on Monday that Simanic had undergone two surgeries in Manila. However, complications arose after the initial procedure, leading to a second surgery on Sunday where his kidney was ultimately removed.

Serbia is set to face Lithuania in a World Cup quarterfinal on Tuesday. Despite the upcoming game, the news of Simanic’s injury has greatly impacted the team. Forward Nikola Milutinov expressed his distress, stating, “It was really tough for us when we heard what happened. First, we didn’t believe it was such a bad thing. It’s really affected us. We’re really praying for him that he’s going to be good as soon as possible.”

Simanic sustained the injury with less than two minutes remaining in Serbia’s victory over South Sudan last Wednesday. The incident occurred when South Sudan’s Nuni Omot attempted to score under the basket, accidentally elbowing Simanic in the process. Simanic immediately displayed obvious pain and eventually fell to his knees a few moments later. This heartbreaking moment has shaken the Serbian squad to its core.

Omot vehemently denied any intention to cause harm, while Milutinov expressed the team’s collective distress, saying, “We didn’t sleep after that game. We were trying to find blood for him, because he was losing a lot of blood. It was really a tough moment for everybody. I hope this will never happen to anybody in the world.”

The team is uncertain when Simanic will be released from the Manila hospital where he is currently receiving treatment. Throughout the World Cup, Simanic contributed three points in approximately 20 minutes off Serbia’s bench.
