World Cup Continues in New Zealand Despite Gunman’s Attack

Tragedy struck a construction site in New Zealand’s largest city on Thursday, just days before the FIFA Women’s World Cup soccer tournament was set to begin. According to authorities, a lone gunman killed two people and injured six others, including police officers, near the hotel where Team Norway was staying in Auckland. Despite the incident, New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins confirmed that the tournament would proceed as planned, stating that there was no wider national security threat and attributing the attack to the actions of one individual.

Acting Police Superintendent Sunny Patel provided details of the incident, revealing that the gunman opened fire at the construction site on lower Queen Street at around 7:20 am. As police swarmed the area and closed off streets, the gunman moved through the building, continuing to shoot at people. Eventually, he trapped himself in an elevator shaft where police attempted to engage with him. More shots were fired before the gunman was found dead, although it remains unclear whether he was shot by the police or took his own life.

Patel emphasized that while the incident was alarming, it was an isolated incident and did not pose a wider national security risk. The responding police officers were praised for their bravery in running towards the gunfire to protect others. Meanwhile, Team Norway captain Maren Mjelde reassured the public that they felt safe throughout the ordeal, thanks to the effective security measures put in place by FIFA at their hotel.
