World Attendance Record Set in Nebraska Volleyball Game

The University of Nebraska has set a new world record for the largest attendance at a women’s sporting event. A total of 92,003 people packed into Memorial Stadium in Lincoln to watch the Cornhuskers’ volleyball match against Omaha. The university had been aiming for this record since last spring when it announced a daylong celebration of women’s volleyball, a sport that is incredibly popular in the state of Nebraska. The event featured an exhibition between in-state Division II teams, Nebraska-Kearney and Wayne State, followed by the Huskers’ regular-season match. The festivities concluded with a performance by country artist Scotty McCreery.

The Cornhuskers dominated the match, sweeping Omaha with scores of 25-14, 25-14, and 25-13, according to the Daily Nebraskan. Prior to this, the record for the largest attendance at a women’s sporting event was 91,648, set during a UEFA Women’s Champions League soccer match in 2022. The match took place at Camp Nou Stadium and ended with Barcelona defeating Real Madrid 5-2. Although Memorial Stadium’s official capacity for football is just over 85,000, the number of attendees for this event was higher due to additional seating and standing room on the field. The event also shattered the previous NCAA Volleyball attendance record of 18,755.

Volleyball has surpassed basketball as the number one girls’ high school team sport in the United States and has long been the top sport in Nebraska. High school teams from across the state were given permission to skip classes in order to attend the game. NCAA president Charlie Baker acknowledged the significance of this event, stating, “The women’s team here is a national contender almost every year, and women’s volleyball is exploding. So when you combine all of these factors, it becomes a seminal event and a great moment.” The previous American record attendance for a women’s sporting event was 90,185, set during the 1999 World Cup soccer final between the United States and China at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

In conclusion, the University of Nebraska’s achievement in breaking the world record for women’s sporting event attendance marks a significant milestone for women’s volleyball and showcases the immense popularity of the sport in Nebraska and beyond.
