Wooden House in Lahaina Miraculously Spared Amidst Maui Wildfires

  • A wooden house with a red roof in Lahaina miraculously survived the devastating Maui wildfires.
  • Surrounded by destroyed buildings, the house stands as a surreal sight, prompting homeowner Trip Millikin to compare it to a photoshopped image.
  • Mysterious as it may seem, the house’s survival could be attributed to the renovations done by the Millikins, who purchased the historic property in 2021.

The destructive wildfires that ravaged Lahaina on Maui spared a single wooden house, leaving homeowners and onlookers amazed by its seemingly untouched state.

Trip Millikin, the homeowner, described the house as if it had been digitally inserted amidst the surrounding rubble, while questioning the improbable survival of this historic red-roofed abode.

Trip and Dora Atwater Millikin, the owners who purchased the property in 2021, decided to renovate the rundown house to preserve a piece of Lahaina’s rich history.

Although they hadn’t planned for fire resistance, the couple’s choice to replace the asphalt roof with a metal one and use stones instead of foliage may have contributed to saving the house.

Dora Atwater Millikin recalled the flying embers during the wildfire, mentioning how they would ignite asphalt roofs but harmlessly fall off the metal roof of their home.

The 100% wooden structure of the house suggests that it wasn’t fireproofed, making its survival even more astonishing.

Feeling a sense of guilt, the Millikins plan to open their house to their neighbors who lost their homes, aiming to rebuild and unite the community.
