Lauren James has received a two-match ban from FIFA for stamping on Nigeria player Michelle Alozie, resulting in her absence from England’s Women’s World Cup quarter-final clash against Colombia, announced the world governing body on Thursday.

James, who is England’s leading goal scorer in the tournament with three goals, was shown a red card for a reckless stamp on Alozie’s back during the 87th minute of Monday’s game.

The 21-year-old Chelsea player, who will also miss the semi-final if England qualifies, apologized for the incident on Tuesday.

Despite being reduced to 10 players for more than half an hour, England went on to defeat Nigeria in a penalty shootout after the match ended 0-0 following extra time.

“The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has imposed a two-match suspension on England’s player Lauren James…,” stated FIFA in a press release.

“The suspension will be valid for the FIFA Women’s World Cup quarter-final and the next international fixture afterwards.”

England will face Colombia on Saturday. The Football Association (FA) declined to comment on the suspension.
