Women’s rights restrictions by the Taliban force Australia to withdraw from Afghanistan cricket series

In a bold move, Cricket Australia has decided to withdraw the men’s cricket team from a series of matches against Afghanistan in March due to the Taliban’s restrictions on women and girls’ education and employment. The three One Day International (ODI) games were scheduled to take place in the United Arab Emirates but have been cancelled after thorough consultation with several stakeholders, including the Australian government. In response, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) labelled the decision “pathetic” and “an attempt to enter the realm of politics and politicize the sport.” However, CA remains committed to supporting and growing the game for women and men worldwide, including in Afghanistan, and will continue to engage with the ACB in anticipation of improved conditions for women and girls in the country. It is worth mentioning that this is not the first time CA has backed out of proposed cricket matches with Afghanistan due to the Taliban’s oppressive policies towards women’s participation in sports activities.
