A woman who startled her loved ones by knocking on her coffin at her own funeral has sadly passed away after spending a week in intensive care.

Bella Montoya, a 76-year-old from Ecuador, suffered a stroke on Friday and subsequently died, as reported by Sky News.

The retired nurse had been under “continuous observation” after she knocked on her coffin during her wake, just hours after being declared dead.

During her wake on June 9th, approximately five hours in, her relatives noticed peculiar sounds coming from the coffin, as her son Gilberto Barbera informed AP.

“My mom was wrapped in sheets and hitting the coffin, and when we approached, we could see that she was breathing heavily,” he said. “It gave us all a fright.”

A video released by AP illustrates the attention Montoya received as she lay on her side, struggling to breathe.

Montoya was rapidly transported to the hospital, but unfortunately, she did not recover.

Following her passing on Friday night, Montoya’s body has now been returned to the funeral home where her wake was initially planned, and she will be laid to rest in a public cemetery, according to Sky News.

The Health Ministry of Ecuador has declared its intention to commence a government investigation into the hospital to determine the procedure for issuing death certificates, as reported by AP. No details regarding the doctor responsible for declaring her dead have been disclosed.
