A woman in Virginia, Cindy Smith, found herself in possession of over 100 Amazon packages she did not order. Among them were 1,000 headlamps, 800 glue guns, and various children’s binoculars, according to a report by CBS affiliate station WUSA.
Smith expressed confusion as the packages kept accumulating outside her home in Prince William County. She stated, “It’s a lot of packages. I didn’t order them.”
Upon inspection, the boxes were addressed to someone named Lixiao Zhang, whom Smith did not recognize. Suspecting a potential “brushing” scam, a fraudulent tactic where sellers send unsolicited packages to boost their online ratings with fake positive reviews, Smith contacted WUSA.
However, WUSA determined that this incident was connected to a different vendor scheme involving Chinese sellers attempting to remove unsold merchandise from Amazon’s fulfillment centers. The return packaging labels traced back to 15 fulfillment centers across nine states.
CJ Rosenbaum, a founding partner at a New York law firm, Rosenbaum Famularo, explained that sellers in China choose random addresses where they can send unwanted products. This practice is a cost-efficient method for them to dispose of excess inventory.
Amazon confirmed that the account belonging to Zhang had violated their policies and has since been closed, as reported by WUSA.
As an environmental science professor, Smith wanted to ensure the items did not end up in a landfill. She took it upon herself to distribute the products throughout her community, offering glue guns and headlamps to neighbors, dog shelters, veterinary clinics, and even surprising employees at a local Burger King. Amazon has not yet responded to Insider’s request for comment.
