Lady Gaga is currently requesting the dismissal of a lawsuit filed by a woman who was previously arrested for stealing two out of her three French bulldogs in 2021. The plaintiff is seeking to collect the $500,000 reward that Lady Gaga offered for the return of her animals.
Jennifer McBride, the plaintiff, returned Lady Gaga’s dogs in February 2021. However, she claims in her complaint filed on February 24th in Los Angeles Superior Court that the singer deceived her into surrendering the pets by assuring her that no questions would be asked upon their return. Gaga’s attorneys argue that McBride was actually involved in a conspiracy to steal the dogs.
“Plaintiff Jennifer McBride is attempting to profit from her involvement in a criminal act,” state Gaga’s attorneys in court papers submitted to Judge Holly J. Fujie on Friday. “The law does not permit an individual to commit a crime and then benefit from it.”
According to Lady Gaga’s lawyers, on February 26th, 2021, just two days after her dogs were stolen, the 37-year-old artist, whose real name is Stefani J. Germanotta, tweeted that she would offer a $500,000 reward for the safe return of her dogs. That same day, McBride brought the pets to the Los Angeles Police Department, and they were subsequently returned to Gaga based on court papers presented by the singer’s attorneys.
“At that time, the plaintiff claimed to be a good Samaritan who coincidentally discovered the dogs on the street and had no knowledge that they belonged to Gaga,” state the singer’s attorneys in the court documents.
Contrary to McBride’s assertion, Gaga’s lawyers argue that she was a willing and informed co-conspirator in the criminal operation. After her story failed to hold up under LAPD investigation, she was promptly arrested, pleaded no contest to knowingly receiving stolen property, and was sentenced to two years of probation in December, according to Gaga’s legal team.
McBride’s lawsuit includes claims of breach of contract, fraud through false promises, fraud through misrepresentation, as well as a request for legal fees, compensation for financial damages, pain and suffering, mental anguish, and loss of enjoyment of life.
McBride argues that she fulfilled her obligations under the reward contract and asserts that Gaga had no intention of actually paying the reward.
The incident occurred on February 24th, 2021, when Ryan Fischer, Gaga’s dog walker, was walking the singer’s three dogs near Sunset Boulevard. Fischer was shot once in the chest with a .40-caliber handgun, resulting in the theft of two dogs and the recovery of the third.
Following the arrest of other individuals involved in the attack, Jaylin Keyshawn White, who was accused of assaulting Fischer, and Howard Jackson, who allegedly shot Fischer, were placed in adjacent cells. White was recorded expressing regret over the arrests and mentioning McBride by name, as stated in Gaga’s attorneys’ court papers.
Jackson pleaded no contest to attempted murder and was sentenced to 21 years in prison in December. White pleaded no contest to second-degree robbery and was sentenced to four years in prison in August.
A hearing for Gaga’s motion to dismiss is scheduled for July 10th.
