Woman Held Captive in Man’s Garage Successfully Escapes

According to NBC News, the FBI commends a kidnapping victim for her “quick thinking and will to survive” which potentially saved other women from a similar horror. The suspect, Negasi Zuberi, was apprehended in Nevada after pretending to be an undercover police officer and abducting a prostitute in Seattle. The FBI’s investigation revealed that Zuberi drove the victim, who was handcuffed and in leg irons, 450 miles to his rented home in Oregon. Throughout the journey, he sexually assaulted her. After reaching the destination, Zuberi allegedly imprisoned her in a makeshift cell made of cinder blocks in the garage.

According to a criminal complaint, the victim eventually decided to take action after waking up and realizing that she would likely perish if she didn’t attempt to escape. She managed to break open the metal door of the cell by repeatedly punching it until its welded joints gave way. Through a small opening in the cell, she climbed out and flagged down a passing motorist who then called 911. Stephanie Shark from the FBI’s Portland office emphasized the importance of the woman’s escape in protecting potential future victims. Unfortunately, Zuberi has been linked to violent sexual assaults in at least four states, with the possibility of more.

Zuberi, 29, was confronted by law enforcement officers the following day in a Walmart parking lot in Reno, where he was found with his family. The suspect refused to exit the vehicle, proceeded to harm himself with a sharp object causing significant bleeding, and attempted to destroy his phone. After a 45-minute standoff, he was arrested. The charges against him include interstate kidnapping. Investigators seeking additional victims have discovered that Zuberi used various aliases and resided in ten different states over the past decade. Chilling notes about a plan called “Operation Take Over” were uncovered during a search of Zuberi’s Oregon home, which included instructions to avoid any investigation by ensuring the victims have minimal connections in their lives.
