An Alabama woman, Carlee Russell, who disappeared under mysterious circumstances for 48 hours, only to later admit that she had not been kidnapped, is now facing misdemeanor criminal charges.
Russell, 25, has been charged with false reporting to law enforcement authorities and falsely reporting an incident. On July 13, she called 911 to report a toddler walking alone on the highway. However, when the police arrived, she had vanished, leaving her running car and belongings behind. This led to search efforts and garnered national headlines. Two days later, Russell returned home on foot and allegedly told the police that she had been abducted and held captive by a man and woman before managing to escape. However, doubts arose about the circumstances of her disappearance and her story, and she eventually admitted, through her attorney, that there had been no kidnapping.
Initially, despite online speculation, Russell’s loved ones staunchly defended her. During an interview with NBC’s “Today” on July 18, Russell’s parents claimed that their daughter had to “fight for her life” while she was missing.
However, several days later, the Hoover, Alabama, police stated that they were unable to verify Russell’s account based on surveillance footage and other evidence. They also discovered that her internet search history included queries about Amber Alerts and the movie “Taken,” which revolves around an abduction.
In a statement released on Monday, Russell’s attorney declared that she was not kidnapped and did not witness a toddler on the side of the road.
