Woman charged with animal cruelty after leaving dog at airport parking lot

  • A woman has been charged with animal cruelty for abandoning her dog at a short-term parking lot at Pittsburgh International Airport.
  • According to police, she left the pet behind so she could fly to Mexico for vacation.
  • She now faces a misdemeanor count of animal cruelty and could potentially face up to 2 years in prison.

A woman on vacation has been charged with animal cruelty for leaving her dog at an airport parking lot in Pennsylvania. Allegheny County Police Department announced the charges against Allison Gaiser, a 44-year-old resident of Kittanning, Pennsylvania. Gaiser is facing a misdemeanor count of animal cruelty, as well as summary violations of animal cruelty, animal neglect, and abandonment of animals by the owner.

Under Pennsylvania law, it is illegal to abandon a dog, and violators can be fined up to $1,000. Misdemeanor animal cruelty, which puts the animal at serious risk of injury, can result in up to two years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

A summons was issued to Gaiser, and investigators revealed that she intentionally left her French Bulldog near a short-term parking lot before boarding a flight to a Mexican resort. The dog was eventually found unattended in a stroller at Pittsburgh International Airport. It was microchipped, which helped in identifying the owner.

In earlier reports, it was mentioned that airline staff had informed Gaiser that she needed to place the dog in a crate to bring it on the plane. However, Gaiser apparently tried to pass the dog off as an emotional-support animal, which the airline officials did not accept. As a result, Gaiser left the dog in the parking lot and continued her journey alone.

The dog is currently being fostered and is in good health. The Allegheny County Police Department encouraged anyone interested in adopting a dog to contact Animal Friends of Pittsburgh. Gaiser has not responded to requests for comments.
