Witnesses: Malaysia Airlines Flight Forced to Make U-Turn due to Passenger’s Threats

  • A Malaysia Airlines flight from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur was forced to turn back due to an unruly passenger making threats, as witnesses reported.
  • It took airport security in Sydney over two hours to remove the disruptive passenger from the plane.

Multiple reports indicate that a Malaysia Airlines flight heading to Kuala Lumpur had to make an emergency landing due to an unruly passenger.

As per witnesses on X (formerly known as Twitter), the disturbance occurred after Flight MH122 had already departed Sydney Airport. The disruptive male passenger was scaring other passengers on board.

An onboard footage seems to capture the man, wearing a backpack on his front, making threatening gestures towards passengers and staff.

Passenger Sammi Marks described the incident as the “scariest situation of her life”. She tweeted that the man got out of his seat mid-flight, unzipped his backpack, and shouted veiled threats while standing near her.

Marks reported that the passenger was also “stalking the aisles, getting in the faces of passengers.” Despite the efforts of cabin staff, the passenger’s disruptive behavior escalated.

Another passenger, Muhammad Zubair, remarked that the man’s actions were unsettling from the beginning. He shared a picture of the flight route, showing the plane turning back to Sydney airport, stating it was not the expected flight path.

The flight landed safely, and all 194 passengers and five crew members have disembarked, according to a Malaysia Airlines spokesperson.

The company stated, “Local authorities are currently assessing the situation. The safety and comfort of our crew and passengers are of utmost importance to Malaysia Airlines.”

The Australian Federal Police informed Insider that the 45-year-old male passenger was arrested without incident and is expected to face charges in the evening.

Passengers took to social media to express their frustration as the plane waited on the runway for over two hours for emergency services to board.

“As a result of this afternoon’s incident, there have been 32 domestic flight cancellations (16 inbound and 16 outbound), with delays of up to 90 minutes for other domestic flights,” reported a spokesperson from Sydney Airport.

This story is still developing.
