The individual who some Republicans in Congress claim has information about alleged corruption within the Biden family has been accused by prosecutors of being involved in multiple serious criminal activities. According to an eight-count indictment from November, Gal Luft is charged with illegal arms dealing and acting as an unregistered agent for the Chinese government. Prosecutors allege that Luft violated US foreign agent registration laws, brokered deals for dangerous weapons and Iranian oil, and lied to law enforcement about his crimes. Damian Williams, the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, made a statement about the case.
Luft, a 57-year-old dual US-Israeli citizen, is a co-director of the Institute for the Analysis of Global Security think tank based in Maryland. He was arrested in Cyprus in February but fled while awaiting extradition in April and is now considered a fugitive. In a video obtained by the New York Post, Luft claimed that he was arrested to prevent him from testifying to the House Oversight Committee about corruption involving the Chinese oil conglomerate CEFC and Hunter Biden, among other members of the Biden family. He stated that he went on the run because he does not believe he will receive a fair trial in New York and denied having any political motives or agenda.
Republicans who have been investigating the Biden family previously expressed concern that their key witness had disappeared. Following the unsealing of the indictment, Rep. James Comer, Chairman of the Oversight Committee, suggested that it was politically motivated. Comer accused the Justice Department of covering up for the Bidens and called Luft a crucial and credible witness. Republican Sen. Ron Johnson also expressed distrust in the Department of Justice, accusing prosecutors of trying to silence Luft.
