The mayor’s office announced on Tuesday that more than 14,000 unhoused Angelenos have been successfully moved inside in the first six months of Mayor Karen Bass’ administration. This progress was shared by Bass and her homelessness and housing team during a presentation on the crisis thus far. The mayor emphasized the need to discuss challenges, solutions, and the way forward to demonstrate clear progress to Angelenos. Despite the ongoing emergency, Bass remains optimistic about the progress made so far.
During her first update in March, Bass reported that 4,000 homeless Angelenos had found shelter, but officials said that the actual number was 8,000. As of Tuesday’s announcement, an additional 6,000 unhoused Angelenos have been sheltered. Va Lecia Adams Kellum, CEO of the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, pointed to data challenges for the undercount in March, which caused delays in validating figures. Data have not only been reviewed and corrected, but they have also provided a true sense of how many people moved from tents into motels, including A Bridge Home and tiny home villages.
Overall, the efforts have resulted in 14,381 unhoused Angelenos being brought inside through a variety of methods. The breakdown includes 8,726 through LAHSA intakes, 1,323 via the mayor’s Inside Safe initiative, 1,591 using emergency vouchers, 1,397 using other tenant-based voucher programs, and 1,344 people who were housed in new permanent housing units. These numbers demonstrate the progress made so far, and the commitment by the mayor’s office and homelessness and housing team to continue identifying proactive solutions to address this ongoing crisis.
